Errors and Penalties

Claiming Discarded Tile - Exposure

  1. Incorrectly Named Discarded Tile (Discarder Corrects Immediately)
    1. If the discarder initially names a discarded tile incorrectly but quickly corrects the naming error before any player attempts to claim it:
      1. No penalty occurs.
      2. The tile, once correctly named, may be claimed for an exposure (or Mah Jongg).
  2. Incorrectly Named Discarded Tile (Claim Withdrawn Before Commitment)
    1. If a player picks up an incorrectly named discarded tile but visually notices the actual tile differs from what was named:
      1. The player may return the tile to the playing area and withdraw their claim without penalty.
      2. The discarder should then immediately correctly name the actual discarded tile.
      3. Important: The player must not have exposed any tiles from their hand or place the claimed discarded tile on top of their rack, to remain penalty-free.
  3. Incorrectly Named Discarded Tile (Claim Committed)
    1. If a player claims an incorrectly named discarded tile and places it on top of their rack or exposes tiles from their hand, they are committed to using the actual claimed discarded tile:
      1. If able to create a valid exposure with the actual claimed discarded tile, the claimed tile must be correctly named before discarding a tile to end their turn.
      2. If unable to create a valid exposure using this actual tile, the player’s hand is dead.
        1. The claimed discarded tile remains in the dead hand.
      3. Important: The player who incorrectly named the discarded tile is not penalized.
  4. Misheard Correctly Named Tile (Claim Committed)
    1. If a player claims a discarded tile that was correctly named but the player misheard the name, placing the tile on top of their rack or exposing tiles from their hand:
      1. The player is committed to making an exposure.
      2. If unable to create a valid exposure, their hand is dead.
        1. The claimed discarded tile remains in the dead hand.
  5. Invalid Exposure Created (Must Correct Before Ending Turn)
    1. If a player creates an invalid exposure after claiming a discarded tile, they must correct the exposure to create a valid exposure using the claimed discarded tile before:
      1. Discarding a tile, or
      2. Initiating a Joker Exchange.
      3. Important: If an exposed tile or grouping cannot be corrected to match a hand on the current card, their hand is dead.
  6. Multiple Exposures from a Claimed Discarded Tile
    1. If a player claims a discarded tile and makes a valid exposure but then mistakenly creates one or more additional exposures from their hand during the same turn:
      1. Their hand is dead.
      2. Only one exposure per claimed discarded tile is allowed.
