Errors and Penalties

The Charleston

Incorrect Tile Count During Charleston

  1. If the player directly left of East has only 12 tiles at any point during the Charleston (before East discards their first tile to start the game), that player may pick their missing 13th tile from the served wall.
    1. This exception applies only to this player.
  2. If any other player discovers an incorrect tile count (not 13 or 14 tiles for East) at any point during the Charleston:
    1. Declare a misdeal immediately.
    2. All tiles are returned to the table, reshuffled, and walls rebuilt.
    3. East remains Dealer.
    4. Restart the game, including serving, breaking the wall, and selecting new tiles.

Passing Jokers During Charleston

  1. Jokers cannot be passed during any part of the Charleston.
    1. Only natural tiles are allowed to be passed.
    2. If a player mistakenly attempts to pass a Joker, the Joker must be immediately returned, and a natural tile must be passed instead.

Resolving Errors During Charleston

  1. If a player passes tiles prematurely or incorrectly, they may adjust or replace the passed tiles only if:
    1. The receiving player has not yet looked at any of the passed tiles.
    2. The passing player has not looked at tiles passed to them by another player.
  2. If an error occurs during the Charleston that cannot be immediately remedied to the satisfaction of all players:
    1. Declare a misdeal.
    2. All tiles are returned to the table, reshuffled, and walls rebuilt.
    3. East remains Dealer.
    4. Restart the game, including serving, breaking the wall, and selecting new tiles.
