Three-Handed Mah Jongg

Three-player Mah Jongg follows standard gameplay rules with these specific adjustments:

Building Walls

  • Four walls of tiles are built.
  • Each of the three players builds one wall (19 tiles long, 2 tiles high) with one player building one additional wall.
    • Typically the player with the empty seat to their right builds the extra wall.

Dealing Tiles

Dealing follows a slightly modified procedure:

  • Players select tiles in rounds, with each round consisting of players selecting four tiles (two stacks at a time). This process is repeated for three rounds, following the standard four-player game format, until each player has a total of 12 tiles.
  • After each player has 12 tiles, and it becomes East’s turn again, each player selects one additional tile, bringing their total to 13 tiles.
  • Finally, East selects one last tile, giving East a total of 14 tiles to begin the game.

Important: The seat without a player is skipped and does not receive any tiles during the selection process.

Charleston Omitted

In three-handed Mah Jongg, no Charleston occurs. Players proceed immediately into gameplay after tile selection.

Gameplay and East Rotation

  • East starts by discarding the first tile.
  • Standard four-player gameplay rules apply.
  • East rotates normally (counterclockwise) after each completed game.
