Dealing (Selecting) Tiles

Initial Tile Selection

  • After East serves and breaks the wall, players begin selecting tiles from the end of the served wall closest to the center of the table.
  • East selects first:
    • 4 tiles (two stacks) from the served wall.
  • Moving counterclockwise (to East’s right), each player then selects:
    • 4 tiles (two stacks) per turn.
  • Continue around the table in this counterclockwise pattern until each player has 12 tiles (three rounds of tile selection).

Serving Additional Wall

  • If East’s wall runs out of tiles, the next player clockwise (left of East) serves their wall using their rack, pushing the right end of their wall towards the center of the table at a 45-degree angle.
  • Players continue selecting tiles from this new wall.

Final Tile Selection (13th and 14th Tiles)

  • After each player has 12 tiles, selection continues:
    • East selects two tiles: the top tile from the first and third stacks, giving East 14 tiles total.
    • The player to East’s right selects the next available tile (end tile), totaling 13 tiles.
    • The player across from East selects the next available tile (top tile), totaling 13 tiles.
    • The player to East’s left selects the next available tile (end tile), totaling 13 tiles.

Recommended Practices

  • Players should select their own tiles without assistance.
  • Keep your selected tiles in face-down stacks between your rack and the table’s edge until everyone has completed selection.
    • Keeping your tiles in stacks shows whose turn it is to select tiles next.
  • Once tile selection is finished (14 tiles for East, 13 for others), players may then arrange their tiles (racking) on the sloped side of their rack.

Note: There is no penalty for players who choose to rack tiles before all players finish selecting their tiles.

Quick Reference

  • Tile selection moves in a counterclockwise (to the right) direction.
  • Serving new walls moves in a clockwise (to the left) direction.
