Serving and Breaking
the Wall

Rolling the Dice

  • East begins by rolling two dice clearly in the center of the table to determine where the wall will be broken.
  • Dice rolls prevent cheating, similar to shuffling a deck in card games.
  • If either die rolls outside the playing area or does not land flat, East must re-roll both dice.

Serving the Wall

  • East “serves the wall” by pushing the right end of their wall out, typically at a 45-degree angle, using their rack for assistance. This angle allows easy access for all players during tile selection.

Breaking the Wall

  • Starting from the right end of East’s served wall, East counts the top tiles moving to the left, equal to the total shown on the two dice.
  • At this point, a small break is created in the wall, dividing it into two sections.
  • The tiles to the left of the break will be the first tiles used in the game.
  • The tiles to the right of the break will be the final wall tiles served in the game.
  • The tiles on top of the wall to the right of the break should equal the dice total.

Retracting Right of Break Tiles

  • East then moves the stack of tiles to the right of the break back towards their rack, aligning them neatly to the right side of their rack.
  • These retracted tiles are reserved as the last set of tiles served, after all other wall sections have been exhausted.

Completing the Setup

  • East removes both dice from the playing area and places them clearly to their right side corner of the table.
  • This placement helps the next East easily locate the dice for their turn.
